Letter from our Pastor

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting the Saint Michael School website. Ours is a Roman Catholic school with a proud history that opened its doors in 1922.

Let me tell you something about St. Michael's. Our school is small so there is a strong sense of community here. The teachers and principal know all of the students and many of the parents by name. The enrollment however is large enough that the students fill our building with life and excitement everyday. Our faculty has many experienced teachers but this year, three new teachers were added to the staff. There is a nice mix of wise experience and youthful energy and creativity.

Let me also tell you about our curriculum. We recently replaced our religion text series. We are now using the Faith and Life series, which is produced by Ignatius Press. This is the same text that is used at the Catholic Academy in Ave Maria, Florida. This year we also hired a religion coordinator for the school and our parish youth minister is now also teaching religion for four grades in the school.

A few years back, our school focused on the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church. During that focus on Catholic Social Teachings, our school earned a re-accreditation from the Middle States Association of Schools and was named a Star School for the Diocese of Paterson.

Over the past several years, our school added a middle school arrangement for the upper grades and a great emphasis was placed on reading, writing and other forms of verbal expression, through school shows and the formation of an award winning forensics team. A few years back, our school added a ski club to its extracurriculars.

Last year, our school joined the Catholic Academy of Sussex County, which is affiliated with the prestigious Pope John Regional High School of Sparta. Upper grade students are invited to participate in special math and science programs at Pope John.

This year, under the leadership of our new principal, Mr. Ernest Jackson, a new computer lab has been added, the library has been renovated, greater emphasis is being placed on math, science and technology, ipads are in use by all of the students in the eighth grade, and a soccer team is up and running.

As you can see, many good things are happening at St. Michael School, a Catholic school where your child can flourish spiritually, academically and physically. I hope to see you one day at St. Michael's. You will not regret it!
