Hello Second Grade Parents!

My name is Miss Kardell and I am extremely excited about the educational journey we are about to embark on this year. Second grade entails a variety of learning aspects, including a review of essential first grade facts and skills, enhanced difficulty of those skills, and completely new skills students will carry with them forever. Second grade is also a year of transitions. Your children will make the transition in penmanship from print to script and the transition in math from addition and subtraction to the beginning multiplication facts.

Along with the new school year and many new changes within St. Michael’s School come changes within the classroom. This year second graders, as well as Kindergarteners and first graders, will be introduced to Guided Reading. This is a type of reading program designed to enhance the skills children use to break down words, sentences, paragraphs, etc. It also teaches them problem solving and comprehension skills that can be used in various subjects and life experiences. I understand any concerns or questions you may have with this change. I believe that Guided Reading will benefit your children in many ways. A more detailed explanation of this program will be provided at Back to School Night (September 14, 2011).

A crucial part of our classroom will be technology. I plan to use as much technology as possible in a variety of way and for all subjects. A small part of each day will be devoted to the students hearing me read aloud. This will allow them to hear fluent reading which will aid in the development of their own fluent reading. I would like to welcome any parent willing to come in and read to the class to contact me through e-mail or at Back to School Night. I believe the students will enjoy your company and involvement in their learning.

As previously stated I am eager and excited about this year. It is important for all parents to know that I am always available through the e-mail address stated at the top of the page. Any questions at all are welcome at any time. Hope all of you are just as excited for this year!
